Critically acclaimed gay film Moonlight failed to pick up a single award, as La La Land scooped five at last night’s Baftas.
The film, about a young black man who struggles to come to terms with his sexuality, was nominated for three awards including best supporting actress for Naomie Harris, but failed to take home any.
It is nominated for eight Oscars.
The big hitter of the night was La La Land, but didn’t reach the record haul it was expected to.
Female lead Emma Stone picked up best actress with the film’s director Damien Chazelle taking the gong for best director.
The star thanked the film’s director and said the world was going through “a bit of a time, just a bit”.
“In a time that’s so divisive, I think it’s so special we were able to come together tonight thanks to Bafta, to celebrate the positive gift of creativity and how it can transcend borders and how it can help people to feel a little less alone,” she said.
La La Land also scooped best film, cinematography and original music.
It was, however, disappointment for Ryan Gosling who was expected to pick up best actor.
Instead, that went to Casey Affleck for his performance in Manchester by the Sea.
“My heart is beating,” said the 41-year-old actor who seemed overwhelmed.
British actor Dev Patel picked up best supporting actor with Viola Davis taking best supporting actress for her role in Fences.
Outstanding British Film went to I, Daniel Blake, the hard-hitting film about the British welfare state.
The event was hosted by Stephen Fry and attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
As President of Bafta, Prince William presented the fellowship to veteran comedian Mel Brooks.
